Saudi fund Alwaleed Philanthropies launches AI to track climate change

Saudi Arabia’s largest charitable organization, Alwaleed Philanthropies, has introduced a new artificial intelligence model, Atlai 2.0, to combat the global climate crisis. This new tool will collect and analyze real-time data on deforestation, temperature changes, air quality, and produce analytical reports.

The initiative is aimed at supporting policymakers, activists, and the public by providing reliable data for decision-making in environmental matters. As noted by the fund’s Secretary-General, Princess Lamia bint Majed Al Saud, the Atlai 2.0 project will be a key tool in addressing the impacts of climate change.

Alwaleed Philanthropies, founded by billionaire Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, has already invested over $4 billion in social welfare programs. The organization also supports educational and international initiatives, including projects with the UN and the University of Exeter in the UK.

Against the backdrop of the launch of Atlai 2.0, Saudi Arabia continues its economic modernization efforts under the Vision 2030 strategy. However, international environmental organizations criticize the country for insufficient measures to reduce carbon emissions and its dependence on oil. According to the Climate Action Tracker, Saudi Arabia’s climate policy is rated as "critically insufficient" and the country actively blocks discussions on fossil fuel transition at the global level.

However, the kingdom is placing significant emphasis on developing the nonprofit sector. According to Princess Nouf bint Mohammed, by 2030, Saudi Arabia plans to increase the charity sector's share of GDP to 5%. The government is focusing on attracting private capital and increasing transparency to assess the social impact of the projects being implemented.
